Headaches are one of the most common conditions that acupuncturists treat. I like to make sure that my patients have tools they can use at home, in the office, or on the go to treat a headache fast.
Acupressure for Headaches
Acupressure can help treat headaches. One of the most common acupressure points for headaches is called Large Intestine 4. It’s located in the between the thumb and the index finger in the “V.” This point is particularly useful for frontal headaches.
Ear Reflexology
Another place that I recommend acupressure to treat headaches and migraines is on the ear. The ear is a microsystem of your whole body; there are parts of your ear that correspond with every part of your body. In auriculotherapy or ear reflexology, the entire body is mapped out on the ear. There are specific points –scientifically validated—that correspond with all aspects of the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, etc.
In regards to headaches, often there is a significant degree of neck tension. So I recommend massaging the areas of the ear that correspond with the neck and those that correspond with the head.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can also be very helpful for headaches. Lavender essential oil is very calming, reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Peppermint essential oil is very helpful in promoting vasodilatation and vasoconstriction thereby improving blood flow in the head. Peppermint tea can also be useful for headaches, particularly when it is a headache associated with the common cold or stress.
Acupuncture for Headaches and Migraines
Chronic recurring headaches respond very well to acupuncture. Also migraines (severe headaches usually on one side often accompanied by nausea and impaired vision) respond very well to acupuncture. In fact, many medical doctors refer their patients to us to treat migraines and even the American Headache Society is promoting acupuncture.
Acupuncture is useful for acute migraines, migraine prevention, and to lessen the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks. Many migraine medications have uncomfortable side effects, while acupuncture is side effect free.
