While many people view stinging nettle as a nuisance and weed, it is actually a local super food full of nutrients and healing potential. When the leaves are dried it can be helpful for treating a number of conditions and it happens to grow wild throughout southwest Ohio.
Benefits of taking nettle as a tea, tincture or supplement include:
- Relaxation
- Anti-inflammatory
- Reduces allergy symptoms
- Can lower high blood pressure and blood sugar
- Provides support for kidneys, adrenals, and urogenital system
- Beneficial for female fertility by supporting hormones and a healthy uterine lining
- For men it supports optimal testosterone levels and prostate health
In the video below, I talk about some of the benefits of drinking nettle tea.
There are a couple of different places to pick up nettle tea. In my opinion, locally harvested within 50 miles of where you live is most ideal for the most optimal and allergy mitigating effects. That said, it can be difficult to find.
On Amazon, Frontier herbs and Starwest Botanicals both have excellent organic nettle tea that is very affordable and sourced from Eastern Europe.
Mountain Rose Herbs, has nettle sourced from Europe and also the pacific northwest.
It is also possible to get it as a tincture or supplement.
How do you make nettle tea?
- Add one teaspoon of the dried leaves to a glass of hot water.
- Let it steep for 15-20 minutes and then strain.
- Save the strained water.
- Add more water to the same batch of dried leaves (that are now wet) and make a 2nd brew.
- Steep again for 15-20 minutes
- Drink 1-2 glasses per day hot or cold.
- You can store it in the fridge for a few days if need be.
- Enjoy with the natural sweetener of your choice!
